What I have learned about copyrights

Filed under: Uncategorized — danielle522 at 6:54 pm on Wednesday, October 17, 2007

I have learned so much through out this trail. I had no idea that showing a movie in the classroom without a direct link to a lesson is considered illegal. In order to play a movie in a classroom, the teacher must obtain a public performance licience. I have worked in many classrooms and even provided the video to watch and had no idea the I was setting a bad example for my students. I would have never thought this would be considered breaking the law before reading the article Copyright 101 by Carol Simpson. I now know after reading the different information on copyrights, I myself have broken the law and need to become more aware of the different types of copyrights and how they are obtained.

Although educators are allowed to have one copy per student, there are time limitations on how long that material can be used in the classroom.

What I wonder about copyrights

I want to learn more about how to properly use information with a copyright. I have been taught some information about copyrights but I do feel like I need to gain more information before I can teach my students about the importance. I also want to know about copyrights on pictures and clip art. I had never thought about that before today.   Now that I have, I need to educate myself more on this topic.

What I know about copyrights

I know that copyrights are a very important aspect of writing a paper, creating a website and even writing a review. Copyrights insure that all of your readers know that some of the information included was NOT your idea. By including copyright information you are making sure that the persons’ ideas that you are using are given the proper credit. Students must be taught how to use and cite a copyright. It is illegal to use information that has a copyright without the proper citations.

Collaboration

According to thefreedictionary.com the definition of collaboration is  to work together, especially in a joint intellectual effort.

Then dictionary.com defined the word collaborate as to work, one with another; coorerate, as on a literary work: They collaborated on a novel.

An Activity to help students become familiar with the  tools available on their computer.

Objective – Students will be able to learn how to use the dictionary- tooltip addon.

Lesson – Students are instructed to devlop a list of words that they want to learn the complete definition to, or a word that they may not know but want to learn more about.  I will then show students an example of how to use the tooltip- add on. We will then split into groups and each group will collaborate a list of words. They will use the tool tip to find the definition. This will then allow students to discover an easier way to incoorporate a larger vocabulary in their lives.

Assessment – After they have found the different definitions, they will be asked to use those words in a sentence. This will reinforce the skills of using this new tool, and will give me a way to assess their progress

My reflection of David Rose’s Podcast and Book

Chapter One – Technology allows teacher to have unlimited instructional resources in the form of computers and digital media.

Chapter Two – Our brains our able to plan, organize and moitor patterns. We barely use our conscious minds while we are doing other things.

Chapter Three – The internet is far less complex and less intelligent than the human brain.

Chapter Four – In a traditional classroom, new methods, perspectives and tools are helping guide students with all abilities.

Chapter Five – Most standards focus on learning how to learn. They focus on students gaining knowledge, skills and understanding. They do leave some room for teachers to shape and individualize for students to attain them.

Chapter six – Recognition, strategy and affect

Chapter seven – Asking students to take the same test is not fair or accurate.

Chapter eight – Some of the major components that are needed to use UDL are technology, administration support, teacher training and support and redefined goals for all teachers, new curriculum, parent involvement and funding.
